jamadagni

Parashurama avenges his dead father Jamadagni.

Jamadagni, (Sanskrit: जमदग्नि) is one of the Saptarishis (Seven Great Sages Rishi) in the seventh, i.e the present Manvantara. He was a descendant of the sage Bhrigu, one of the Prajapatis created by Brahma, the God of Creation.

Jamadagni was later killed by a Kshatriya king Kartavirya Arjuna, over a dispute over a divine calf named kamadhenu. However Jamadagni was restored to life by Lord Shiva, as he was among a saptarishi and his devout worshipper(as quoted in Shiva Mahapurana).

Jamadagni, in various traditions, is recognized as a significant sage and the father of Parashurama. In Jainism, he is linked to the abbot Jana, while in Vaishnavism, he symbolizes divine lineage and strength. Purana narratives highlight his ascetic lifestyle, complex relationships, and involvement in significant events such as cursing his wife Renuka and being sought by King Ashvavahana for guidance. His legacy includes mastery of the Vedas and a wrathful reputation, culminating in a cycle of revenge following his death, shaping the heroics in Hindu mythology

Maharishi Jamadagni was a great sage and scientist of Indian culture whose contribution is extremely important in the field of science and philosophy. His sacred words and teachings remain a source of prosperity even today and his contribution has given important direction to modern science and philosophy.

Contributions of Maharishi Jamadagni:

Maharishi Jamadagni taught his disciple Parashar in the field of philosophy and theology. His teachings are still important in the study of Vedant and theology.

Works of Maharishi Jamadagni:

1.“Jamadagni Samhita” (Sanskrit text):

“Jamadagni Samhita” written by Maharishi Jamadagni is an important text that supports the principles of righteousness, philosophy, and yog. This book is still famous for righteousness and metaphysical studies.

2. "Parashara Samhita" (Sanskrit text):

"Parashar Samhita" written by Parashar, a disciple of Maharishi Jamadagni, is also an important text which provides knowledge in the field of astrology and Vastushastra. This book is still alive in astrology and the methods given in it are followed.

jamadagni-s, who were a minor clan in the Şākala-saṁhitā́, having around 13 hymns to their name,  rose to great importance by the time of the śrauta-sūtra-s, where they were put first in the pravara-adhyāya-s.

They were also numerically the largest clan in the śrauta-sūtra-s.

Jamdagni, the descendant of Bhrigu is mentioned by Vishwamitra in hymn 3.53 and 3.62 and by Vashishtha in hymn 7.96 indicating their contemporariness.

Itihasa-Puranas describe Jamdagni as the son of the sister of Vishwamitra. This is in alignment with the Rigveda.
Jamdagni Bhargava is the composer of hymns in 8th. 9th, and 10th Mandalas.

Rama Jamdagneya is the composer of hymn 10.110

In the Rigveda, patronym doesn't guarantee a father-son relationship. It guarantees an ancestor-descendant relationship. But Itihasa-Puranas describe Rama as the son of Jamdagni. If we accept this, Rama Jamdagneya has to be placed in the period of the 3rd and the 7th Mandalas. Both 3rd and 7th Mandalas are of the same period.

the bhArgavas (and particularly, the branch of jamadagni, who allied himself with the purus) are credited with discovering the fire ritual and propagating it to the rest vedic peoples, and in this sense they are the primordial gotra

if you take a look at the mantra-s mentioning the bhArgava-s in the Rgveda they contain the motif of bhRgu maharSi finding agni in a cave (lead by vAyu). the ritual fire is deeply connected with the bhArgavas chyavana, apuvAna, aurva, and jamadagni, who form the pravara for the jAmadagnya vatsa/zrIvatsa gotra-s we see today, and whose names are read during the pouring of libations into the fire by the hotR

while it is true they did not compose many mantra-s, they are hailed and respected by almost every other mantra composing family in the Rgveda family maNDala-s. while this discussion pertains mostly to the bhArgava-s as a whole, the jAmadagnyA-s are the main "branch"
